On 9 February 1983, Denis Nilsen was arrested after murdering fifteen young men and secreting their bodies throughout his flat. He explained afterwards:

I was killing myself but it was always the bystander who died. I think that in some cases I killed these men to create the best image of them, I brood, at night, behind my iron screen.

18 years later, Isaac Webster buys a computer and realises that he can meet men online. He embarks on a quest for love. As visitor after visitor passes through his bed, he discovers that he and the murderer share more than he had imagined in common…

Black & Blue is a new multimedia opera about love, death and the internet, and the horrific consequences of failing to connect.

I did the video projections. It was a work-in-progress show at the Battersea Arts Centre. I produced windows, feathers, computers and pornography. Built and operated live in Macromedia Director. I did stuff with live processed camera that I really liked.

The music was by Michael Oliva, who then went back to the composing board and produced a full version at the BAC in 2004. It was directed by Erica Whyman.
